Rise of Venice is the spiritual successor to the Patrician and Port Royale series. Like those, it focuses on trading and sea battle mechanics. As the title suggests, it is set in the time of Venetian trade hegemony in the eastern Mediterranean. Additional gameplay elements come from internal politics of Venice, which are composed of specific missions for the different families, bribery and sabotage. In addition to just trading, the player can also construct production facilities, which require raw material management, housing and a selection of public buildings. Pirates, pirating and sea battles are naturally another part of the game. Sea battles can either be fought manually or automated.
