Rhythm Destruction is a 2D, top-down, vertically scrolling shoot 'em up. It looks like a typical shoot 'em up game, but the focus is on dodging and maneuvers, combined with rhythm based attacks. The ship can be freely moved around the screen, but cannot shoot at any moment. Only when arrows appear above enemies and the key corresponding with the arrow's direction is pressed at the right moment, a shot is launched. An arrow is surrounded by a narrowing circle with a specific colour, representing a 4th, 8th, 12th, 16th, 24th or 32nd note. Rhythm attacks often consist of quick notes is succession or two directions combined. Meanwhile various hazards in the environment needs to be avoided and bullets need to be dodged. It is usually not possible to destroy all enemies on the screen, only a certain number.
